Fruit is incredibly expensive out here in North Carolina, but also really tasty. So when it goes on sale, the produce section at the grocery store (Harris Teeter, Bi-Lo, Lowe's, Food Lion - such foreign names to a West Coast girl!) gets a little nutty. People swarm like flies on anything going for less than $1.50 a pound. But it's not a competitive thing - more often you'll hear people trading tips on which side of the pile has the better peaches, how the grapes don't taste quite right, how the cherries are amazing but selling cheaper at the farmer's market down the road.
The occasional sale on fruit makes us giddy at the prospect of a crisper full of something other than bland apples.
When I've lost faith in the goodness of people from reading too much terrible news all day long, I pay a visit to in the produce aisle and all is right in the world.
