A Night at the Opera

Rode the light rail Uptown to see Opera Carolina perform Verdi's Aida. They did a lovely job. Big sets and booming voices. They even had a camel, a zebra and a huge white stallion in the cast! Only drawback was the rather distracting fact that the opera's titular Nubian princess was performed by a white woman in a terrible wig. That's showbiz, I guess. If you can't find a singer with the right color skin, let the audience use its imagination, eh?

"If you can't find a singer with the right color skin...." But you're in North Carolina! Maybe it's a progressive stance: color doesn't matter.

I know. It's puzzling. And I do know they put makeup on all the Egyptian soldiers to make them look more suntanned. I guess they could have done the same for Aida. Especially since the story really is one about interracial love. But Opera Carolina is probably very progressive and I just lack imagination.
