A couple of hours from where I live, there are rolling hills where long leaf pines stick straight up from the sandy soil like candles on a birthday cake and everyone lives on a golf course. I'm not even a golfer, and I found Pinehurst absolutely delightful. It's the kind of place I can see my grandparents settling. . . everyone golfs all day long or sits reading on their screened-in patios with a tall class of something iced. Very genteel. There must be more country clubs per-capita in Pinehurst than anywhere in the country and people pay good money to stay in them.
I had the good fortune of a free place to stay with my good friend Jenny who's there temporarily. If she stays a bit longer, I think I'll go back!
