Me vs. The Man

A month ago I went to dinner downtown and found a miraculous free parking spot on the street right outside. It seemed too good to be true, but after careful examination of the street sign and curb I determined the spot was fair game.

An hour later, I came back to a $25 ticket on my windshield and no reason other than "sign violation." Except that, as I said, the sign indicated we were fine to park there. Fuming, I took several pictures and swore to fight the ticket. See the sign? It was 9 p.m. on a Friday night. I was totally okay parking here.

I'm still fighting it. The first round was an online appeal that took the city two weeks to deny. I doubt they read my eloquent explanation of their error.

Next I get a hearing. But before I could even schedule it, I was required to pay the ticket in what amounts to a forced admission of guilt. Apparently the parking nazis don't adhere to basic principles of justice.

The whole process is such a pain, I have been tempted to just pay the stinking $25 and drop it. But that's exactly what the blasted bureaucrats are counting on, so I'm determined to go down fighting.

This Thursday I get 15 minutes with a hearing officer. I'll be armed with my photos and my righteous indignation. Wish me luck.

Go for justice. Parking enforcement is a total scam for the people and a cash cow for the city. We have the same problem here. Looking forward to your success.

U go get em! Then do a story on it after so the city knows you are watching! It is definitely the method municipalities use when there is a budget crisis. Well, that and speeding traps!
